Diageo Rare Malts Tasting

Diageo Rare Malts Tasting - London 1st October

Many thanks to Paul and Alex for attending yesterday's rare malts tasting.

Feedback on this years line-up detailed below:

Port Ellen 32 (new batch, but same age as last year)

The Port Ellen 32 was very good but not the best there by any means especially given the price premium. I was expecting it to be a bit more complex – for taste I had light ‘milk puddingy’ almost creamy, light honey and a kind of heather/hoppy thing going on. Would be a fantastic pairing with a strong cheese (that is if you really had to eat something at the same time).

Caol Ila, 14 year old 59.3%.

The cheapest whisky there at £66 rrp. The mix of honey, hay and breezy feel despite the high alcohol content were a revelation. Highly rated - this whisky is a steal.

Auchroisk 30 year old 54.7%.

Possibly the best whisky of the evening, less than half the price of the Port Ellen 32 but at least twice as good. Loads going on with the taste with new layers of each flavour presenting themselves each time you returned for a sip – treacle, lots of fruit – citrus even banana, and with a subtle leathery/smoky bite. This is whisky at its very best. Needless to say several visits were called for!

Talisker 35 year old 54.6%

Such a well known whisky that the taste was almost predictable – but excellent nevertheless, a highly refined version of a real favourite among whisky drinkers. Talisker at its very best.  Not cheap at £525 a bottle!

Brora 35 year old 48.1%

Pretty good and the most buttery whisky if that’s what you like.

Dalwhinnie 25 year old 52.1%

Really complex with a great peppery finish.

Lagavulin 12 year old 56.1%, tawny

Probably the sweetest whisky of the evening - interesting but not exceptional.

Lagavulin 21 year old 52%

This is a big whisky and if you’re already a fan of Lagavulin this would be a real treat.

Just drop me a line if any tickle your fancy!

Dunkertons Cider - New Lines in Stock

Susie and Ivor Dunkerton have been pressing rare cider apples at Hays Head, Pembridge (Herefordshire) since 1981 and continue to innovate, recently launching two new single variety ciders - Dunkertons Brown and Dunkertons Breakwell Seedling.

Both ciders could be described as medium dry with the Brown slightly smoother and lighter in style while the Breakwell has an underlying toffee flavour.

These ciders form part of a 10 strong range from Dunkertons which are available in store and on-line and include a vintage cider and 3 traditional farmhouse still ciders.

Drinks Retailing Awards 2012

Tuesday, 8 November 2011 13:50:27 Europe/London

Pure Spirit Drinks Short-listed for Three Major Drinks Retailing Awards

We are very pleased to announce that Pure Spirit Drinks has been short-listed for no less than three categories in the national Drinks Retailing Awards 2012. This is the first year, Pure Spirit Drinks has entered the awards and has been short-listed as a finalist for Independent Drinks Retailer of the Year, Independent Beer Retailer of the Year and Independent Cider Retailer of the Year.

Organised by trade publication Off Licence News, the glittering prestigious ceremony will take place at London’s famous Dorchester Hotel in London on Tuesday 7 February 2012, where the results will be announced.

Following the initial shortlist, each retailer has been visited by an independent judge in order to verify the standard of retailing. Judges are looking for winners who can act as an inspiration to the rest of the drinks trade, have demonstrated that they have worked hard to understand their market and have a service that rises well above the norm.
